The most important week dedicated to contemporary art in the USA has already begun. After giving you some anticipations, it is now the turn to reveal an important news concerning Art Basel Miami Beach 2017
In fact, 2017 marks the first year in which the Swiss independent curator Philipp Kaiser — director of the Ludwig Museum in Cologne and curator of the swiss Pavilion at the last Venice Biennale — will take care of the Public curatorship of Art Basel Miami Beach 2017, the fair sector dedicated to large outdoor sculptures, public art works and performances, in the setting of Collins Park in Miami. One of the highlights of Public — among the eleven works by established and emerging artists scheduled this year — will be, in fact, “Les Guirlandes” by Daniel Buren, characterized by striped decorative garlands placed on Collins Park. Instead, some speakers will play sampled pieces — from the baroque works of Jean-Baptiste Lully to Scott Joplin’s ragtime — which will be systematically interrupted by the acting of some words in 14 different languages, while the video “Koe”, by Cyprien Gaillard, analyzes the implications of territorial movements following a flock of exotic parrots that, coming from Africa and Asia, have been brought to Europe to be kept as pets. This year Public theme is “Territorial” and Philipp Kaiser, commenting on the concept, says that “The works selected for Public deal with this aspect of sculpture, linked to the claim of space or territory through dimensions, scale, intensity and sound, among the various artistic practices”. Free entry, but watch out: Public will remain open only until eleven o’clock tonight…so hurry up!
